Sin: A Cardinal Deposed Will Play Boston, Scandal's Crucible, in June; Producer Seeks Angels

By Kenneth Jones
16 Apr 2004

Bailiwick Repertory's lauded Chicago production of Sin: A Cardinal Deposed travels to Boston, the hometown of its main character, Cardinal Bernard Law, June 9-27.

Since its Windy City world premiere in March, Michael Murphy's docudrama, based on public records surrounding the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal, the play has received both audience and critical acclaim. It's expected to have a wide regional life.

In Boston, Sin plays Wednesdays-Thursdays at 7:30 PM, Fridays at 8 PM, Saturdays at 3 PM & 8 PM, and Sundays at 3 PM and 7 PM at the Regent Theatre, 7 Medford Street, Arlington, MA.

Tickets are $30 on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and $40 on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.  Tickets can be purchased online at www.acardinaldeposed.com or calling (781) 646-4849.

"We are looking for partners of all kinds to help us make this move to Boston," said David Zak, artistic director of the not-for-profit Bailiwick, in a statement. He noted that after an initial invitation to perform in Boston was withdrawn, Bailiwick Repertory decided to take the unusual step of producing the road-trip itself.

"We are looking for donors and sponsors to help underwrite the theatre rental, actor fees and housing, and travel costs," he said.

Those interested can contact Bailiwick company manager Mark Steel at Mark@bailiwick.org. Boston theatre critic Ed Siegel raved about the Chicago run, as did other national and local.

Zak said, "While this is an undeniable risk for a non-profit of our size, our strongest desire was to see this unique production brought to a Boston audience as soon as possible.  We hope that the extraordinary response the show has received in Chicago will be matched by every community in Boston touched by this tragedy."

Bailiwick Repertory also announced a second extension of Sin in Chicago.

Bailiwick will be bringing the entire original Chicago cast to Boston.  Jim Sherman plays Cardinal Bernard Law.  Patrick Rybarczyk portrays attorney Mitchell Garabedian in Act I, in the matter of Father John Geoghan, and Mark A. Steel portrays attorney Roderick MacLeish, Jr. in Act II, in the matter of Father Paul Shanley. Steve Best portrays J. Owen Todd, attorney for Cardinal Law, while Naomi Landman and Patrick Gannon play multiple characters — lawyers, survivors, and others involved with the case.  A second cast — featuring Gene Cordon as Cardinal Law — will take over in Chicago while the first cast is on the road.

The play is billed as "a collage of testimonies of, by and surrounding Cardinal Bernard F. Law — the Catholic leader whose governance of his diocese was questioned and scrutinized when years of sexual abuse by diocesan priests finally came to light.  This searing and emotional work is comprised entirely of testimony taken from the Cardinal's deposition in this case involving hundreds of priests and victims, and a case that still ricochets in today's headlines."
