Boy Hopes to Be Orphan Annie in New Musical, That's Andy, Getting First Glimpse in NYC April 26

By Kenneth Jones
26 Apr 2004

That's Andy, a new musical about a young boy whose only dream in life is to play the title role in Annie, gets a New York City reading April 26 from Ergo Theatre Company.

The 7 PM reading is sold out; the 4 PM run-through is open to select guests. The reading is at Ripley Grier Studios, 520 Eighth Avenue (at 36th Street) on the 16th Floor.

Ergo's artistic director Robert Jay Cronin came up with the idea for the show, which has music by Kevin Carter and book and lyrics by Crystal Skillman. Cronin directs the presentation, which represents Act I of the show.

The reading cast includes Christian Anthony, Brad Bass, Gene Biscontini, Alexander Brickel, Brittany Brown, Jedidiah Cohen, Miryam Coppersmith, Betsy DeLellio, DJ Gregory, AJ Irvin, Francis Kelly, Carolyn Konopka, Bill Kux, Robyn Lee, Scott Marshall, Johanna Pinzler, Shannon Polly, Carolyn Popp, Kate Pazakis, Daniel Robbins and Eamon J. Foley (Assassins, Gypsy) as Andy.

In the show, Andy "causes chaos in his wholesome town when he is caught 'red-handed' auditioning for the show wearing the signature red dress," according to Ergo notes. The comic and warm musical promises to challenge the meanings of right and wrong.

In recent seasons, Cronin and Carter collaborated on a musical version of Albert Innaurato's Gemini, which was shelved in recent months when Innaurato took on a new collaborator and went his own way with the project (toward Philadelphia's Prince Music Theater, in fact).
