San Francisco's Best of Broadway Gets Jerry, Lennon, Edna, Wife, Evita and White Christmas

By Ernio Hernandez
10 May 2004

San Francisco will enjoy many Broadway-bound productions when the 2004-2005 Best of Broadway season includes Jerry Springer – The Opera, Lennon and Dame Edna: Back with a Vengeance as well as I Am My Own Wife, Evita, As You Like Itand a new holiday musical staging of White Christmas.

Presenting in the Orpheum, Curran and Golden Gate Theatres, Best of Broadway will also announce an eighth show at a later date.

The London hit Jerry Springer – The Opera will make a stop in California prior to its Broadway berth. The new show based on the world of the American talk show host features music by Richard Thomas and book and lyrics by Thomas and Stewart Lee — who also directs. Performances begin Feb. 28, 2005 at the Orpheum Theatre before heading to Broadway for an Oct. 20, 2005 opening.

Legendary Beatles singer-songwriter John Lennon will be immortalized on stage in Lennon, a new musical based on the life and songs of its namesake. Written and directed by Don Scardino, the work is produced by arrangement with Yoko Ono. The work is set to debut in winter of 2005 at the Curran Theatre.

Dame Edna will make her return to the Broadway stage with her latest show, Back With A Vengeance, but not before stopping in San Francisco this fall at the Curran. Barry Humphries brings his Tony Award-winning creation to life once more to dish to her beloved "possums" before opening at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre in November 2004.

Broadway's newest Pulitzer Prize winner for Drama, I Am My Own Wife will play at the Curran in the spring-summer of 2005 with original Broadway star Jefferson Mays. Moisés Kaufman directs the Doug Wright drama about a real-life German transvestite who survived Nazi Germany.

Director Walter Bobbie brings San Francisco a little winter treat this year with Irving Berlin's White Christmas, as first reported by Playbill On-Line.

Sir Peter Hall brings his touring production of William Shakespeare's As You Like It, starring his daughter, Rebecca Hall, as Rosalind, to the Curran in spring 2005. The touring Cameron Mackintosh production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Evita is set for the Golden Gate Theatre in spring 2005.
