Goodbye, Miss Dorothy: Angela Christian Exits Thoroughly Modern Millie June 9

Angela Christian

Angela Christian, the last of the original principals to leave Thoroughly Modern Millie, exits the Broadway musical comedy after the evening performance June 9.

Christian originated the role of blue-blood orphan Miss Dorothy Brown at the Marquis Theatre, singing "How the Other Half Lives" (a duet with Millie) and the romantic operetta duet "I'm Falling in Love With Someone" by Victor Herbert (with baritone executive Mr. Trevor Graydon).

In a role created on film by Mary Tyler Moore, Christian played a wide-eyed character with three potential lovers, and provided major plot surprises at the end of each act.

For her work in Millie, she was nominated for a 2002 Outer Critics Circle Award.

Christian made her Broadway debut as maid Lily in James Joyce's The Dead, and then played Miss Molly Ivors in the Kennedy Center run of the Richard Nelson show.

The San Antonio, TX, native is expected to be in the world premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber's new musical, The Woman in White, in London, though full casting for that show has not been officially announced.

Among her credits are the premieres of Joe DiPietro's O. Henry's Lovers at American Stage Company in New Jersey and Jon Lipsky's Maggie's Riff by Merrimack Rep.

Although Christian is the last original principal leaving the Michael Mayer-directed Millie, Tony Award winner Harriet Harris, who had left earlier, rejoined the troupe June 7 to play the last two weeks of the Broadway run, to June 20. Harris won her Tony as evil Mrs. Meers, a white slaver with her eye on Miss Dorothy.

Emily Rozek and Jessica Grové take over for Christian in the show's final weeks.
