Gavin Creel Starts in The Mystery Plays at Second Stage's New Plays Uptown, June 21

Gavin Creel in The Mystery Plays

Thoroughly Modern Millie's Tony Award-nominated star Gavin Creel heads the cast of the world premiere co-production of Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's The Mystery Plays, at the McGinn/Cazale Theatre, June 21.

Second Stage Theatre offers the Yale Repertory Theatre co-presentation as part of its New Plays Uptown series. The new work, directed by Connie Grappo, is slated to open June 28 for a run through July 10.

The Mystery Plays follows the intertwined retellings of two separate mysterious tragedies: "a train wreck in the Northeast corridor and a desperate expedition to find meaning in an incomprehensible crime in Oregon," a release states. Both chance events shed light on the other.

Creel is joined in the cast by Scott Ferrara (Henry IV - Parts I and II, Lincoln Center), Leslie Lyles (Roulette), Mark Margolis (Christmas in Naples, Williamstown Festival), Heather Mazur (The Violet Hour) and Peter Stadlen (Birdy). The actors performed the work at the New Haven, Connecticut New Theater April 30-May 22 prior to its New York berth.

The design team for The Mystery Plays features Sandra Goldmark (scenic), Amanda Walker (costume), S. Ryan Schmidt (lighting) and Keith Townsend Obadike (sound). Scott French and Rachel Rusch serve as dramaturgs.

Grappo's directorial credits include Annie Weisman's Hold Please and Rob Ackerman's Tabletop (Working Theatre), Belmont Avenue Social Club, On House, Spread Eagle and Century City.

Aguirre-Sacasa is a Yale School of Drama graduate. His plays include Rough Magic, Golden Age, 2003 International Fringe Festival playwriting winner Say You Love Satan and The Muckle Man — which played as part of The Public Theater’s 2002 New Work Now! Series.

Michael John Garcés next directs Brooke Berman's The Triple Happiness for the New Plays Uptown Series. The play is about a Westchester family's life which "spins wildly out of control when a down-on-her-luck movie star and a hopelessly romantic college girl invade their home," according to show materials.

Tickets to Second Stage's New Plays Uptown at the McGinn/Cazale, Broadway and 76 Street, are available by calling (212) 246-4422 or visiting the Second Stage box office at 307 West 43 Street. For more information, visit www.secondstagetheatre.com.
