Lauren Kennedy to Be Part of Ten Commandments Musical

By Andrew Gans
and Ernio Hernandez
28 Jul 2004

Lauren Kennedy, most recently on Broadway as Fantine in Les Misérables, will be part of the cast of the new musical The Ten Commandments: The Spectacle Musical.

Kennedy's official website says that the actress be among the cast of the musical starring film actor Val Kilmer as Moses. The stagework, presented by BCBGMaxAzria Entertainment (founded by fashion designer Max Azria and Charles Cohen) and 7Art, is set to begin performances at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, California Sept. 18 and open Sept. 27.

The Ten Commandments, which has previously played in Europe, has undergone revisions with a new production team for its American debut. The musical features music by film composer Patrick Leonard and lyrics by Maribeth Derry. Pascal Obispo penned the original score.

Robert Iscove (Peter Pan with Sandy Duncan) directs the grand scale musical that will feature a cast of 50 dancers and singers. He will work with the original Paris staging's director, French film auteur Elie Chouraqui ("Harrison's Flowers") — who founded 7Art.

The design team will feature sets by Giantito Burchiellaro and Azria handling costumes. Following its Los Angeles debut, The Ten Commandments is expected to tour to major venues in North America with a possible stop at Radio City Music Hall.

Lauren Kennedy covered the role of Daisy Hilton in the Broadway production of Side Show and also appeared in the New York companies of Sunset Boulevard and Les Misérables. She starred in The Rhythm Club and was also a part of the early incarnations of Jason Robert Brown's The Last Five Years, playing the role that would be played Off-Broadway by Sherie Rene Scott, when Kennedy crossed the Atlantic to star in the National Theatre's revival of South Pacific. Her debut solo CD — "The Songs of Jason Robert Brown" — boasts the premiere recordings of three new Brown tunes, "And I Will Follow," "Letting Go" and "If I Told You Now."
