Arkin, Reeve, Gross To Star in Premiere of Margulies' Brooklyn Boy in CA and Broadway

By Kenneth Jones
29 Jul 2004

Casting has been announced for the world premiere of Brooklyn Boy, opening on Broadway in early 2005 as a Manhattan Theatre Club production in association with South Coast Repertory Theatre.

The new Donald Margulies play, to be directed by Daniel Sullivan (Proof, Sight Unseen), will dawn at South Coast Rep in Orange County, CA, Sept. 3-Oct. 10 and then move on to New York City, where previews are scheduled to begin Jan. 13, 2005. The limited Broadway run at the Biltmore Theatre plays to March 20, 2005.

Brooklyn Boy will star Arye Gross, Ari Graynor, Adam Arkin (as the play's center, a writer), Kevin Isola, Mimi Lieber, Alan Miller and Dana Reeve.

According to MTC, the new play by the Pulitzer Prize winning author of Dinner With Friends and Sight Unseen "is about a writer who has finally hit the big time after years of hard work with a bestselling novel primed for a Hollywood adaptation. But has success changed him? And does where we're from affect who we become?"

Here's how South Coast Rep bills the play: "It's a witty and insightful look at what happens to a writer when his novel hits the best seller list. Eric Weiss is suddenly famous, but his personal life is unravelling. His wife is out the door, his father is in the hospital, and his aunt tells him he should have worn a tie on the 'Today' show! Then Hollywood beckons, and it looks like all that glitters really could be gold. But Eric has a lot to learn in this funny and emotionally rich look at family, friends — and fame."

The Arkin clan has a predilection for Margulies' work. Adam acted in the original Off-Broadway MTC/Orpheum Theatre production of Sight Unseen, replacing Dennis Boutsikaris in the lead role, while his brother, Matthew, starred in Dinner With Friends.
