World Premiere of Donald Margulies' Broadway-Bound Brooklyn Boy Begins in CA, Sept. 3

By Ernio Hernandez
02 Sep 2004

Donald Margulies

Adam Arkin stars as a writer with newfound fame in the world premiere Donald Margulies play,Brooklyn Boy, which begins its pre-Broadway run at Costa Mesa, California's South Coast Repertory, Sept. 3.

Daniel Sullivan (Proof, Sight Unseen) directs the co-production with Manhattan Theatre Club which will open on SCR's stage, Sept. 10 for a run through Oct. 10. The show will then head to Broadway's Biltmore Theatre for a Jan. 13-March 20, 2005 run.

Ari Graynor ("The Sopranos," "Mystic River"), Arye Gross ("Ellen," "The Experts"), Kevin Isola (Wasp & Other Plays, Everett Beekin), Mimi Lieber (I'm Not Rappaport), Allan Miller and Dana Reeve ("Oz," More to Love) join Arkin in the new work by the Pulitzer Prize winning author of Dinner With Friends and Sight Unseen.

Brooklyn Boy follows the tale of a marginal writer who is finally garnering success while his life is otherwise faltering: his marriage is on the rocks, his father is in the hospital, his aunt is pestering him and Hollywood is calling. The work was commissioned by SCR and developed at the company's 2003 Pacific Playwrights Festival.

The design team feature Ralph Funicello (sets), Jess Goldstein (costumes), Chris Parry (lights) and Michael Roth (music and sound). Jerry Patch serves as dramaturg and Scott Harrison is SCR's stage manager.

Arkin appeared in the SCR Pacific Playwrights Festival reading of Brooklyn Boy. His theatre credits include I Hate Hamlet, Guys and Dolls on Broadway and Sight Unseen, The Extra Man and Four Dogs and A Bone Off-Broadway. He is known to television audiences for his turns on "Chicago Hope," "Northern Exposure," and guest appearances on "Frasier" and "The West Wing."

Tickets to Brooklyn Boy at South Coast Repertory, 655 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa, CA, call (714) 708-5555. For more information, visit the SCR website at www.scr.org.
