Kansas City's Unicorn Opens 2004-05 Season With Bright Ideas Sept. 3

By Kenneth Jones
03 Sep 2004

Unicorn Theatre, the resident professional company that offers edgier Off-Broadway-style fare to audience in Kansas City, Missouri, opens its 2004-05 season Sept. 3 with Eric Coble's Bright Ideas.

The satirical comedy, continuing to Sept. 26, "proves getting your child into the perfect school can be murder."

"In Bright Ideas, Genevra and Joshua Bradley are determined social climbers, possessed with getting their son, Mac, into Bright Ideas Early Childhood Development Academy, the crème de la crème for the three-foot-and under crowd," according to Unicorn. "But, when they discover their son has been placed on a mile-long waiting list, their craze drives them to extreme measures to get him into the school. With few other options, they find themselves descending into madness and mayhem."

Bright Ideas won the 2002 AT&T Onstage Award and the National Theatre Conference 2002 Playwriting Award.

Joseph Price directs the Kansas City run, with a cast that includes Katie Gilchrist (as Genevra) and Nathan Darrow (as Joshua), with Andi Meyer, Heidi Van Middlesworth, Vanessa Severo and Michael Andrew Smith. Unicorn Theatre is headed by producing artistic director Cynthia Levin.

Tickets may be purchased at the Unicorn or by phoning (816) 531-PLAY (7529) ext. 10.

Bright Ideas had its New York premiere at MCC Theatre in 2003.

The 2004-05 Unicorn season will also include the Gregg Coffin musical, Convenience; Suzan-Lori Parks' Topdog/Underdog; Thomas Gibbons' Permanent Collection (a National New Play Network co-world premiere); Theresa Rebeck and Alexandra Gersten-Vassilaros' provocative Omnium Gatherum; Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen's The Exonerated; and a play to be announced.
