Sirius Satellite Radio: Songs From Upcoming Musicals on "Radio Playbill"

By Robert Viagas
07 Sep 2004

Songs from upcoming musicals Brooklyn, Little Women and Spamalot are featured on the Sept. 6-19 edition of "Radio Playbill," as part of host Robert Viagas' preview of the upcoming Broadway season of plays, musicals and revivals. The show features the latest on a major political thriller, a musical by the Monty Python troupe, revivals of classics by Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman and Cy Coleman, and brand-new score by the composer of The Full Monty— all of which lie ahead in the 2004-05 Broadway season, which has already seen the openings of The Frogs and Dracula, and shifts into high gear this month. Then, test your knowledge in the weekly Playbill Quiz.

"Radio Playbill," a news and entertainment magazine show of theatrical interviews, features and music, is broadcast multiple times each week on Sirius Satellite Radio's Our Time, Stream 131.

A new 30-minute show debuts each Monday, with rebroadcasts throughout the following two weeks. Here is the schedule (all times are Eastern): New show Monday Sept. 6 at 5 PM, Wednesday Sept. 8 at 11 PM, Friday Sept. 10 at 5 AM, Saturday Sept. 11 at 5 PM, and Sunday Sept. 12 at 9 AM. Rebroadcasts continue following the ensuing week?s shows: Monday Sept. 13 at 5:30 PM, Wednesday Sept. 15 at 11:30 PM, Friday Sept. 17 at 5:30 AM, Saturday Sept.18 at 5:30 PM, and Sunday, Sept. 19 at 9:30 AM.

All the excitement and glamour of the American theatre scene comes across in "Radio Playbill," the first radio project from the creators of Broadway's distinctive programs, and Playbill On-Line, the home of theatre on the internet. The program reflects Playbill's unique access and knowledge of the world of Broadway, broadcasting from Sirius' midtown Manhattan studios overlooking Times Square.

Previous guests on "Radio Playbill" have included Susan Stroman, Hugh Jackman, Nathan Lane, Stephen Sondheim, Idina Menzel, Donna Murphy, Mickey Rooney, Alec Baldwin, Anne Heche, Matthew Broderick, Tonya Pinkins, Sheldon Harnick, Boy George, Joel Grey, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Chita Rivera, Rosie O?Donnell, Michael John LaChiusa, Andrew Lippa, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Antonio Banderas, Jerry Herman, Barbara Cook, Tony Kushner, William Finn, Michael Crawford, Jason Robert Brown, Patrick Stewart, Rebecca Luker, Alan Menken, Liz Callaway, Jerry Zaks, Julia Murney, Cy Coleman, Stephen Flaherty, David Auburn, Jeanine Tesori, Charles Strouse, Cherry Jones, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Baz Luhrman, George C. Wolfe, Maury Yeston, Sherie Rene Scott, and many more.

The program has offered the first (and sometimes only) chance to hear songs from Wicked, Bounce, Dracula, Brooklyn, Little Women, Jerry Springer: The Opera, Avenue Q, Caroline Or Change, A Stoop on Orchard Street, Bombay Dreams, The Little Princess, The Boy From Oz, Hairspray, Taboo, Urban Cowboy, The Fabulist, Marty, Dance of the Vampires and revivals of Assassins, Wonderful Town, Fiddler on the Roof, Little Shop of Horrors, Nine and Man of La Mancha, among many more shows.

You can now listen to some of the best of these with RealPlayer in the "Radio Playbill" archives on Playbill On-Line.

Host for the magazine show is Robert Viagas, founding editor of Playbill On-Line and Theatre.com, author of several books on theatre, including "On the Line: The Creation of A Chorus Line" and "The Amazing Story of The Fantasticks," and editor of Louis Botto?s updated book, "At This Theatre."
