Cam Jansen, New Musical from Bat Boy's O'Keefe, Sets Off-Bway Dates

By Andrew Gans
10 Sep 2004

Cam Jansen, a new musical written by husband-and-wife team Laurence O'Keefe (music) and Nell Benjamin (book and lyrics), will begin a limited run at the Lamb's Theatre Nov. 6.

Gordon Greenberg will direct the Theatreworks/USA production, which officially opens Nov. 12 and runs through Nov. 28. Casting has yet to be announced for the musical, which is based on David A. Adler's series of popular books.

Cam Jansen, according to production notes, concerns a girl "who discovers she can use her amazing photographic memory to solve crimes. She teams up with her former rivals and her best friend to unravel the most mysterious case of all — the disappearance of the Emerald Elephant of Pajamastan."

Laurence O'Keefe wrote the score to the hit Off-Broadway musical Bat Boy, which recently opened in London. Nell Benjamin wrote the lyrics to The Mice (with music by O'Keefe), which was part of the Harold Prince-produced evening 3hree. O'Keefe and Benjamin are currently composing the score to the upcoming Broadway musical Legally Blonde.

Tickets to Cam Jansen are priced at $25 and are available by calling (212) 239-6200 or by visiting www.telecharge.com. The Lamb's Theatre is located in Manhattan at 130 West 44th Street.

Theatreworks/USA is a non-profit professional theatre for family audiences. Cam Jansen will mark the beginning of its 44th season.
