Broadway Lights to Be Dimmed in Memory of Fred Ebb Sept. 14

By Kenneth Jones
13 Sep 2004

The League of American Theatres and Producers announced that the lights of Broadway's marquees will be dimmed for one minute at 8 PM Sept. 14 in memory of the Tony Award-winning lyricist Fred Ebb, who died over the weekend.

"Broadway has lost one of its giants," said League president Jed Bernstein. "Fred Ebb was a superb craftsman, a genius of a dramatist who, with John Kander, wrote many of the greatest scores heard on Broadway in the past four decades."

Working with composer John Kander in one of Broadway’s longest-running collaborative relationships, Fred Ebb penned the lyrics for such musicals as Cabaret, Woman of the Year and Kiss of the Spider Woman (all of which received Tony Awards for Best Score), as well as Chicago (currently playing in revival), Zorba, The Rink, 70 Girls 70, The Act and Steel Pier. Kander & Ebb's first Broadway show was Flora the Red Menace, which introduced Broadway to Liza Minnelli in 1965.
