The Con Is On: Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, the Musical, Starts San Diego Run Sept. 15

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, the new musical from the director, choreographer and songwriter of The Fully Monty, makes its first appearance Sept. 15 at the Old Globe in San Diego, four months prior to its Broadway bow.
Due to popular demand, The Old Globe in San Diego has announced a one-week extension of its world premiere staging of the musical, to Oct. 31.
The musical comedy is inspired by the 1988 film of the same name (itself a remake of 1964's "Bedtime Story"), and has music and lyrics by composer-lyricist David Yazbek, direction by Globe artistic director Jack O'Brien and choreography by Jerry Mitchell (Hairspray, Never Gonna Dance). The libretto is by Jeffrey Lane (noted for TV's "Mad About You").
The cast includes Tony Award winner John Lithgow (Sweet Smell of Success) and Tony Award nominee Norbert Leo Butz (Thou Shalt Not, The Last Five Years) in the title roles, Sherie Rene Scott (Aida, The Last Five Years), Tony winner Joanna Gleason (Into the Woods), Gregory Jbara (Victor/Victoria, Damn Yankees) and Sara Gettelfinger (the recent Broadway Nine).
Following its run at The Old Globe, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels will open at Broadway's Imperial Theatre March 3, 2005 after previews from Jan. 31, 2005.
According to the Old Globe, "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels centers on two con men living in the French Riviera. The first, a small-time crook named Freddy Benson [Butz], swindles women by waking their compassion with fabricated stories about his grandmother's failing health. The other is suave, sophisticated con artist Lawrence Jameson [Lithgow], who also makes his living by talking rich ladies out of their money, but on a much grander scale. After meeting on a train, they attempt to work together only to find that this small French town isn't big enough for the two of them. They agree on a settlement: the first one to extract $50,000 from a young female target wins, and the other must leave town. A hilarious battle of cons ensues, bringing out the best and worst in each man, along with a fun, unexpected twist that will keep audiences laughing, humming and guessing to the end!"
The company includes Timothy J. Alex, Andrew Asnes, Roxane Barlow, Joe Cassidy, Julie Conners, Rachel deBenedet, Laura Marie Duncan, Sally Mae Dunn, Rick Faugno, Tom Galantich, Jason Gillman, Greg Graham, Amy Heggins, Grason Kingsberry, Rachelle Rak and Tony Yazbeck.
Ted Sperling is musical director. Zane Mark is dance music arranger. Orchestrations are by Harold Wheeler.
Designers are David Rockwell (sets), Gregg Barnes (costumes), Kenneth Posner (lighting) and Acme Sound Partners (sound).

Due to popular demand, nine performances have been added to the San Diego run, including a new weekday matinee on Oct. 28 at 2 PM at a special ticket price of $49. Added performances are Oct. 26 at 7 PM, Oct. 27 at 7 PM, Oct. 28 at 2 PM and 8 PM, Oct. 29 at 8 PM, Oct. 30 at 2 PM & 8 PM and Oct. 31 at 2 PM & 7 PM.
