John Ashcroft Goes to Urinetown in Kotis' Eat the Taste, Sept. 20

By Robert Simonson
20 Sep 2004

"Kotis Is Kotis! Hollman Is Hollman! And Ashcroft Wants Them Both!" So might read the ad copy for Eat the Taste, a new reality-tweaking comedy by Greg Kotis which will get a staging at the Barrow Street Theatre beginning Sept. 20.

The show opens Oct. 4, playing Mondays only. John Clancy, former artistic director of the New York International Fringe Festival, will direct. The play also features a new song by Kotis and Hollmann.

Greg Kotis gave the Broadway hit Urinetown its libretto and (with composer Mark Hollmann) lyrics.

The play—like many others currently playing the New York theatre scene—takes the Bush administration as its inspiration. The time is the future and Bush's White House cronies are looking for new work. Among these are "Attorney General Ashcroft who wants to parlay his life story and singing career into an uplifting Broadway musical. The AG sends special agents to New York to convince the creators of Urinetown that they are the right team for his project because they are in-touch with the 'hipper' crowd…and because Elton John is not available."

In a bit of self-referential cheekiness, Greg Kotis and Mark Hollmann will play themselves. Also in the cast are Bill Coelius, Gibson Frazier, Paul Urcioli and Eva van Dok.

The artistic team includes Lauren Helpern (scenic design and props), Tyler Micoleau (lighting design), Brian Ronan (sound design), Kim Gill (costume design) and David Brimmer (fight director).

Eat the Taste is produced by Scott Morfee and Planetearth Partners, Inc.; Cris Buchner, General Manager.

Kotis and Hollmann both won Tonys for Urinetown, which was born at the NYC Fringe when Clancy was artistic director.

Tickets for the open-ended, Mondays-only run are $25 ($20 for students) and can be purchased by calling Telecharge.com or at (212) 239-6200 or at the Barrow Street Theatre box office.
