Frankenstein...do you dream, a New Musical, Opens Its Eyes at NY Musical Theatre Fest Sept. 23-Oct. 2

By Kenneth Jones
23 Sep 2004

Frankenstein...do you dream, a new musical exploration of the legendary monster tale, plays The New York Musical Theatre Festival Sept. 23-Oct. 2.

Composer-librettist Rob Asselstine's musical "is the rarely told story of unrestrained ambition, passion, and desire at the heart of Mary Shelley's original novel," according to production notes. "This is a tale about loving and being loved, and at its core lies the simple request from the creature Daemon: 'I just want you to make one like me.' Dramatic, compelling, and psychologically profound, this fresh musical treatment captures the power of the novel while allowing the emotional content to find a new lease on life through a new score."

Directed by Eric Till, with arrangements and orchestrations provided by Glenn Morley, the Equity showcase will feature Broadway stars Craig Schulman (Les Misérables) as Victor Frankenstein and Philip Hernández (Les Misérables, Kiss of the Spider Woman, The Capeman) as Daemon. The cast also includes Kyle Bradford, Daniel Cochran, Dennis Holland, Douglas Jabara, Jennifer Kersey, Reed Prescott, Jerry Ross, Amy Russ, Matthew Tweardy and Jimmy Walsh.

Asselstine began his career as a producer, writer, arranger and session player. His credits include acting as arranger and session player on the Canadian Gold Record, "Comin' on Stronger" by the Mercey Brothers on MBS Records. Asselstine is the vice president/co-founder of The Association of Canadian Librettists, Composers & Lyricists (ACLCL).

Prior to bringing Frankenstein...do you dream to New York City for NYMF, Asselstine presented the original showcase of the show in Toronto, and a concert production in Hamilton, Ontario in 2003.

Asselstine is currently developing a book musical entitled Harry,, a fictionalized account of the life and times of Harry Houdini.

Performances play The Belt Theater at 336 W. 37th Street Sept. 23 at 8 PM, Sept. 25 at 11 PM, Sept. 26 at 4:30 PM, Sept. 29 at 8 PM, Sept. 30 at 8 PM, Oct. 1 at 1 PM, Oct. 2 at 4:30 PM & 8 PM.
