Scarred Lovers Find Each Other in The Enchanted Cottage, the Musical, in NYC Readings Sept. 27 & 30

By Kenneth Jones
27 Sep 2004

The Enchanted Cottage, the new musical based on the Arthur Wing Pinero play, gets public readings in Manhattan Sept. 27 and 30 as part of The New York Musical Theatre Festival.

Peter Flynn directs the musical by Kim Oler (music), Alison Hubbard (lyrics) and Thomas Edward West (book), at Primary Stages 354 W. 54th Street. Performances are presented by the National Music Theatre Network's Broadway/USA! Series (Tim Jerome, producer).

According to the presenters: "Enter The Enchanted Cottage, where a bitter, disfigured World War I veteran turns able and a lonely, ugly woman turns beautiful, through the transformative power of love."

The reading cast includes Willy Falk (Miss Saigon), Andrea Burns (Saturday Night, Songs for a New World), Barbara Marineau, Joe Kolinski, Annie Golden (Assassins, People Be Heard), Steve Routman, Rose McGuire, Rex Hayes and Jeff Brooks.

The musical received the 2003 Jerry Bock Award and the 2002 BMI Jerry Harrington Award, and was featured in the 2002 NAMT Festival of New Musicals in New York, starring Michael Hayden and Emily Skinner. The song "Tennis" was the subject of a discussion by Maury Yeston in the latest Dramatists Guild Quarterly Magazine, an issue on the art of lyric writing.

The musical has been heard in The BMI-Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop.

West, Oler and Hubbard received a grant from the Lila Acheson Wallace Readers Digest Fund for their original musical, Class Clown, produced at the Promenade Theatre in Manhattan and by the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera.

The 1921 play The Enchanted Cottage was made into a film in 1945. Robert Young and Dorothy McGuire starred.

Tickets are $15. For reservations and ticket info, call (212) 352-3101. Performances are at 4:30 PM.
