Presented by Clear Channel Entertainment, the tour — conceived and directed by Tony-winning Hairspray lyricist Scott Wittman — kicks off at the Palace Theatre in Columbus, OH. With musical direction by Chris Fenwick, Matters of the Heart will play engagements in Minneapolis, MN (Orpheum Theater, Oct. 5–10); Cincinnati, OH (Aronoff Center for the Arts, Oct. 19–31); Pittsburgh, PA (Byham Theater, Feb. 8–20, 2005); Portland, OR (Keller Auditorium, April 5–10); Seattle, WA (Paramount Theater, April 12–17); and Atlanta, GA (Fox Theater, May 5–15). Dick Gallagher supplied the musical arrangements for the concert.
Matters of the Heart has been seen in extended engagements at Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theater, the Donmar Warehouse in London and Australia's Sydney Festival. The concert, which explores all the various aspects of love, features works by Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Randy Newman, Jimmy Webb, Brian Wilson, Judy Collins, Dan Fogelberg, Joni Mitchell and Cyndi Lauper.
A Tony Award winner for her work in Evita, Patti LuPone also earned an Olivier Award for her performances in the West End productions of Lés Misérables and The Cradle Will Rock. Her other theatrical credits include Sunset Boulevard, Anything Goes, Oliver!, Working, The Old Neighborhood, Master Class and Pal Joey. LuPone also headlined two solo Broadway concerts, Patti LuPone On Broadway and Matters of the Heart, and received glowing notices for her performance as Mrs. Lovett in the Lincoln Center concert version of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. For the past four summers she has appeared in concert versions of Sondheim's Sweeney Todd, Passion, A Little Night Music and Sunday in the Park with George at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, IL.
