Really Useful Launches New Phantom Sites—for Film and Stage Musical

By Andrew Gans
21 Oct 2004

The Really Useful Company has created two new websites celebrating Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. One site details the various stage production of the international hit musical, while the other concerns the forthcoming motion picture.

By visiting www.thephantomoftheopera.com, internet users can choose either "The Show" or "The Movie." "The Show" website features news and reviews about various Phantom productions as well as the chance to purchase tickets to the London, New York, Budapest, U.S. tour and world tour productions. The site also supplies cast lists from the many Phantom mountings around the world and a "Sights & Sounds" section that features photos, videos, posters, music and Phantom wallpapers.

"The Movie" website brings internet users to the Warner Bros. site for the movie, located at phantomthemovie.warnerbros.com. This site features a condensed retelling of the story, the movie's trailer as well as photos, message boards and Phantom contests. The Joel Schumacher film is set to hit movie screens in December 2004. The motion picture stars Gerard Butler in the title role, Emmy Rossum as Christine and Patrick Wilson as Raoul, and includes one new song by Lloyd Webber and lyricist Charles Hart.

Based on the classic Gaston Leroux novel, The Phantom of the Opera features music by Lloyd Webber, lyrics by Charles Hart and additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe. Harold Prince directed both the London and New York premieres. The New York production — originally starring Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman — won seven 1988 Tony Awards including one for Best Musical. The score includes such tunes as "Think of Me," "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again," "The Point of No Return" and the title tune.
