Gayton Scott — the actress who stepped for Julie Halston in Gypsy — will again replace the departing star in the Off-Broadway comedy White Chocolate, Oct. 31.
Halston's final performance in the world premiere William Hamilton play will be Oct. 30. Scott will assume the role which Halston took over from Nora Dunn.
Reg E. Cathey and Lynn Whitfield star as the wealthy white couple who wake up black in the work by New Yorker cartoonist and writer Hamilton. Previews began Sept. 21 and the show officially opened at the Century Center for the Performing Arts Oct. 6.
Scott has also been seen on Broadway in Present Laughter and actually opposite (though still understudying) her constant first-stringer Halston in The Women. She has also played in a workshop production of Oh Captain at the York Theatre and the national tour of The Buddy Holly Story. Her regional credits include Three Postcards, The Times, Lost in the Stars, The Making of Americans and Noises Off. The actress also appeared on "Guiding Light."
The Culture Project and Allan Buchman in association with Nile Rogers We are Family Foundation present the White Chocolate that also stars Erik Laray Harvey (The Exonerated, Where's My Money), Paul H. Juhn (wAve, Destination America) and Samantha Soule (Dinner at Eight, Valhalla).
White Chocolate centers on Brandon (Cathey) and Deborah Beale (Whitfield), a married and affluent couple living on New York City's Upper West Side who are readying themselves for the announcement of the husband's appointment as director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. However, things don't go exactly as planned when the white couple awake to find their skin color has changed.
Playwright Hamilton has written for The Atlantic Monthly, Harper's Magazine and The New York Times Sunday Magazine and Gourmet in addition to his duties at the New Yorker.
The design team for White Chocolate includes James Noone (set), David Weiner (lighting) and David Zinn (costume).
