Taboo's Carlson and Jekyll & Hyde's Cuccioli to Star in Lorenzaccio

Jeffrey Carlson, who starred in the short-lived Broadway bow of Taboo, and former Jekyll & Hyde star Robert Cuccioli have been cast in The Shakespeare Theatre's upcoming production of Lorenzaccio.
A spokesperson for the theatre confirmed to Playbill On-Line that Carlson will star in the title role of Alfred de Musset's play, with Cuccioli playing Alexander de Medici, the Duke of Florence. Boasting a new translation/ adaptation by John Strand, the play will be presented Jan. 18-March 6, 2005, at the Washington, D.C. theatre. Michael Kahn will direct Lorenzaccio, which marks the first professional production of the play in the U.S.
Lorenzaccio is described as a "tale of political intrigue, moral dilemmas and individual heroism." The play, according to production notes, centers on "Lorenzo de Medici, friend and cousin to the notorious Alexander de Medici, Duke of Florence. At the price of his moral and physical integrity, Lorenzo allies himself to the Duke in order to kill him, hoping to liberate Florence from the Duke’s tyrannical rule."
Jeffrey Carlson's Broadway credits include Taboo, Tartuffe and The Goat or Who Is Sylvia? He was seen at the McCarter Theatre in the title role of Emily Mann's production of Romeo and Juliet and in their recent mounting of Candida; his other theatrical credits include The Miracle Worker, Thief River, Manuscript and Sodom and Gomorrah.
Robert Cuccioli, recently seen in the Paper Mill Playhouse's Guys and Dolls, earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical for his work in Jekyll & Hyde. He won the Drama Desk and the Outer Critics Circle awards for that performance as well. Cuccioli also appeared in the Broadway production of Les Misérables and has been seen on screen in "Sliders," "Baywatch," "Celebrity," "The Stranger" and "Operation Delta Force 3: Clear Target." He also starred Off-Broadway in Temporary Help.
