The play about faith, morality and trust has been generating good word of mouth since beginning previews Nov. 3 at Manhattan Theatre Club's Stage I. It opens on Nov. 23.
Doug Hughes (Frozen and MTC's An Experiment With an Air Pump) directs a company that includes Tony Award winners Cherry Jones (The Heiress) and Brían F. O'Byrne (Frozen) as a nun and a priest at a Bronx Catholic school in the 1960s. They are joined by Heather Goldenhersh (Psych, MTC's Last Dance) and Adriane Lenox (Caroline, or Change).
Hughes' work on Bryony Lavery's Frozen was praised, causing that MCC play to transfer to Broadway last season.
According to Variety, producer Carole Shorenstein Hays holds commercial rights to "Doubt."
"In the 1960s, at a Catholic school in the Bronx, a nun grows suspicious when a priest begins taking too much interest in the life of a young male student," according to MTC notes. "Is she being overly protective...or not protective enough?"
Shanley's plays include Italian American Reconciliation, Where's My Money?, Cellini, Four Dogs and a Bone, Danny and the Deep Blue Sea (getting a revival Off-Broadway this season) and Beggars in the House of Plenty. He is also known for his screenplay to "Moonstruck," which is being developed for a musical.
Designers are John Lee Beatty (set), Catherine Zuber (costume), Pat Collins (lighting) and David Van Tieghem (original music and sound).
