Vital Theatre Company Inaugurates New Off-Broadway Home with Dear Vienna, Nov. 8

By Robert Simonson
08 Nov 2004

The Vital Theatre Company will christen its new home, The McGinn Cazale Theatre above The Promenade Theatre on Upper Broadway, with Dear Vienna, a new play by Catherine Allen, directed by Julie Hamberg.

The show, which began previews on Nov. 4, will open on Nov. 8 for a run through Nov. 21.

Featured in the cast are Ross Beschler, Tug Coker, Jessi Gotta, Judith Hawking ("Living Out"), G.R. Johnson, and Ron Mcclary (Idiot's Delight, What You Will).

The show is described as a high comedy in which, "Dr. Sigmund Freud, fresh from medical school, decides to become… a playwright. In the rich intellectual, politically charged, and artistic environment of Vienna of 1881, he begins his masterwork. However, there are those in this city of dreams who would use Freud's play for their own ends. There's the suave political editor, the stunning and devious Countess, the blow-hard philosopher, a young noble with certain tendencies to hide, and a little French maid. The maneuverings of these principals propel Freud into a new world of ideas and sexuality, opening his eyes to the true nature of humanity, and eventually to the kernel of psychoanalysis."

Hamburg directed Vital's previous production of Robert Sherwood's Idiot's Delight.
