Roundabout Postpones Ed Harris-Directed Fool for Love to Fall 2005

By Ernio Hernandez
18 Nov 2004

Roundabout Theatre Company announced it will delay the Broadway premiere production of Sam Shepard's Fool for Love — which original actor Ed Harris will direct — to fall 2005.

"The postponement is due to scheduling conflicts with casting and Mr. Harris' commitments to other projects at this time," according to an official release. "The revised preview and opening dates will be announced shortly."

Fool for Love was slated to play a limited run at the American Airlines Theatre starting Jan. 14, 2005, but was then bumped to Jan. 19 when the current resident at the space, Twelve Angry Men, extended. The Reginald Rose jury-room drama, further extended to Feb. 6, 2005, again delaying the work.

Fool for Love focuses on a chance meeting between two former lovers at a seedy motel near the Mojave Desert. As the story unravels, we learn that it may be more than just a chance encounter, and they may be more than just lovers.

Harris earned an Obie Award for originating the role of Eddie in the Shepard work during its Off-Broadway debut at the Douglas Fairbanks Theatre in 1983. Kathy Baker starred opposite Harris under the direction of the playwright. Ellen Barkin and Bruce Willis were among the replacement players in that production which lasted 1,000 performances before closing in 1985.

As an actor, Harris made his Broadway debut and earned a Tony Award nomination for his turn in Precious Sons. Other stage credits include Simpatico, Taking Sides, Prairie Avenue, Scar, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Grapes of Wrath, Sweet Bird of Youth and Trumbo.

The Englewood, New Jersey, native has also appeared in the films "A Beautiful Mind," "Stepmom," "The Truman Show," "Apollo 13," "The Right Stuff," "The Firm" and "Glengarry Glen Ross." Harris' feature film directorial debut, "Pollock," earned two Academy Award nominations.

Playwright-actor Shepard is set to make his return to the stage as an actor in the New York Theatre Workshop Off-Broadway staging of Caryl Churchill's A Number. A new Shepard play, God of Hell, is currently debuting Off-Broadway with Frank Wood, Randy Quaid, J. Smith-Cameron and Tim Roth.
