Howard Zinn and Other Noted Guests Set to Appear in Off-Broadway's Guantánamo

By Ernio Hernandez
19 Nov 2004

Following a special appearance by Nobel Peace Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu earlier this year, Guantánamo: Honor Bound to Defend Freedom has added a new roster of noted guest performers.

At the Sunday Nov. 21 matinee, political activist/ professor/ historian and author of "A People's History of the United States" Howard Zinn will assume the same role Reverend Tutu played, Lord Justice Steyn — a British magistrate who objects to the detainment of political prisoners at the title American military base located in Cuba. He will also take part in a post-show talkback session.

Def Poetry Jam's Beau Sia (Nov. 24) and Suheir Hammad (Nov. 26), actor Peter Gerety (joined by Barbara Olshansky of the Center for Constitutional Rights at the talkback) (Nov. 30), President of New York Lawyers Against the Death Penalty Ron Tabak (Dec. 3), New York Civil Liberties Union Executive Director Donna Lieberman (Dec. 10) and Editor of The Nation Katrina vanden Huevel (Dec. 11) will also perform in the role.

Allan Buchman and The Culture Project present the American debut of the London documentary drama Guantánamo: Honor Bound to Defend Freedom which opened at the 45 Bleecker Street Theatre, Aug. 26 following previews from Aug. 20. The show recently announced a Dec. 19 closing date.

Similar to the theatre's former tenant The Exonerated, the drama Guantánamo is based on actual testimony of detainees (as well as lawyers and public officials). Victoria Brittain and Gillian Slovo assembled the work from interviews (conducted in March and April 2004) of five British detainees at the titular Cuban locale who were released from imprisonment in late February.

Nicolas Kent and Sacha Wares direct the work which was commissioned (from an idea by Kent) by the Tricycle Theatre in January 2004. The show opened at the northern London Tricycle in May to sold out crowds and then moved to the West End before closing Sept. 4.

The design team include Miriam Buether (set and costume) and Johanna Town (lighting).
