La Cage's Washington, Vibrations' Reinders and Scoundrels' Cassidy to Enter "Broadway Spotlight"

By Andrew Gans
26 Dec 2004

Michael Benjamin Washington

The acclaimed "Broadway Spotlight" series, which features Broadway performers in a concert setting, will continue in 2005 at the Ars Nova with stars from La Cage aux Folles, Good Vibrations and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

As previously announced, Hairspray's Shayna Steele will kick off the 2005 "Broadway Spotlight" season Jan. 10. David Cook will be the musical director for Steele's evening, which is set to include a mix of R&B and soul. Errol Cooney, Justin Johnston and Adam Roberts will also be part of the 8 PM concert.

The series, curated by Gordon Greenberg, will then present concerts with La Cage aux Folles' Michael Benjamin Washington (Feb. 7 at 8 PM), Good Vibrations' Kate Reinders (March 7 at 8 PM) and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels' Joe Cassidy (April 4 at 8 PM).

Michael Benjamin Washington, who plays Jacob in La Cage, originated the role of Eddie in the Broadway company of Mamma Mia!. He was also seen as Ted in Stephen Sondheim's Saturday Night, and his one man show is titled Mahogany: Reflections on Vanity. Kate Reinders, currently in previews in Good Vibrations, was last on Broadway playing June in the Sam Mendes-directed revival of Gypsy. Her other Broadway credits include Into the Woods and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Joe Cassidy, who is part of the cast of the upcoming musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, has been seen in New York productions of 1776, Show Boat and A Christmas Carol. His regional credits include Children of Eden, Dracula and Jekyll & Hyde.

Previous "Broadway Spotlight" concerts have spotlighted the talents of Avenue Q's Ann Harada and John Tartaglia, Dance of the Vampires' Max von Essen, Les Miz’s Lauren Kennedy, Hairspray's Shoshana Bean, Into the Woods' Chad Kimball, Aida's Felicia Finley, Rent's Anthony Rapp, Wicked's Idina Menzel and Funny Girl’s Leslie Kritzer.

The Ars Nova Theater is located in Manhattan at 511 West 54th Street. Call (212) 868-4444 for $15 tickets or go to www.SmartTix.com.
