Tony Winner Stars in World Premiere of Christopher Shinn's On the Mountain in CA

Tony Award winner Daisy Eagan stars in the world premiere of Christopher Shinn's On the Mountain set for its Jan. 2, 2005 start at South Coast Repertory.

Mark Rucker directs the SCR-commissioned work set to open at the California company's Julianne Argyros Stage Jan. 7 for a run through Jan. 23, 2005.

On the Mountain follows the story of a rebellious teenager who has been raised by her thirty-something mother after her rock star lover committed suicide when the girl was an infant. Now, hoping for a future with a new man, her past comes back up.

Eagan — seen on Broadway in James Joyce’s The Dead, Les Misérables and The Secret Garden — stars as the iPod-wielding youngster opposite Susannah Schulman, Nathan Baesel and Matt Roth.

The design team includes Donna Marquet (sets), Melanie Watnik (costumes), Rand Ryan (lights) and Aram Arslanian (sound/composer). Jerry Patch serves as the dramaturg and Randall K. Lum is the stage manager.

Eagan is the youngest actor to win a Tony earning the honor at age 11 for her turn in The Secret Garden. Other stage appearances include War in Paramus, Be Aggressive, First Day of Hunting Season, Caught in the Net and Smack the Birdie. She also appeared in the film version of Tony 'n' Tina's Wedding.

Shinn is the author of the plays Four, Other People, The Coming World, Where Do We Live and What Didn't Happen. The scribe is also currently at work on a new musical with composer David H. Turner about a young composer who completes the unfinished musical of a late legendary Broadway songwriter.

Director Rucker staged last season's Cyrano de Bergerac and the previous season's The Two Gentlemen of Verona at SCR. He garnered acclaim for his feature film debut, "Die, Mommie, Die!" by and starring Charles Busch. Other directing credits include the world premiere of Roger Rueff's So Many Words (SCR), the premiere of Anna Deavere Smith's House Arrest (Arena Stage in Washington, D.C.) and a James Magruder's new translation of Molière's Imaginary Invalid at Yale Repetory Theatre.

The new work is already slated to make its New York debut at Playwrights Horizons beginning Feb. 4, 2005. Amy Ryan, Alison Pill, Ebon Moss-Bachrach and James Lloyd Reynolds will star in the separate staging directed by Jo Bonney (Fat Pig, Living Out ).

Tickets to On the Mountain at South Coast Rep, 655 Town Center Drive in Costa Mesa, CA are available by calling (714) 708-5555 or online at www.scr.org.
