Menopositive! We're Still Hot, Hit Canadian Musical About 35th High School Reunion, Begins NYC Run Jan. 7

04 Jan 2005

The U.S. premiere of the Canadian musical We're Still Hot, known as Menopositive, the Musical when it played north of the border, begins its Off-Broadway run Jan. 7, a few days later than previously expected.

A cast changes occurred since the first announcement of the original musical by JJ McColl and Rueben Gurr. Entertainment Events Inc., and Waxman Williams Entertainment with Robert Dragotta, present the award-winning musical that tells the story of four 50-something women putting together a show for their 35th high school reunion.

We're Still Hot has a book by JJ McColl and score by McColl and Rueben Gurr. Sue Wolf directs the New York staging, with a cast that includes Cheryl Freeman (Fame on 42nd Street, The Who's Tommy" Play On!, and The Civil War, for which she earned Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Award nominations); Deirdre Kingsbury; Marnee Hollis; and Jane Seaman (The Secret Garden, Anything Goes, Big River, Sound of Music and Man of La Mancha).

Opening night is Feb. 8 at the Theater at St. Luke's, 308 West 46th Street, the long time home of such popular Off-Broadway fare as Tony n' Tina's Wedding, Late Nite Catechism and Maybe Baby It's You.

McColl, a veteran of the Canadian Broadcasting Company, based We're Still Hot on stories she recorded of dozens of women at a series of potluck dinners. Collaborating with her was Rueben Gurr, a musician since the late 1960s.

Musical direction will be by Alan Plado. Designers are Takeshi Kata (set), Philip Heckman (costume), Greg Cohen (lighting) and Drew Levy (sound).

Performances will be Tuesday through Saturday evenings at 8 PM, with matinees Wednesday at 2 PM, Saturday and Sunday 3 PM.

For tickets ($45-$65), call (212) 352-3101.

With the smash success of Menopause the Musical in the U.S., it's no surprise that there was a name change for Menopositive - why confuse the consumer? Unlike Menopause the Musical (which is an Off-Broadway hit and blossoming in productions around the world) We're Still Hot boasts an original score rather than parody lyrics added to pop tunes.

Under the title Menopositive, the show played sold-out performances in Ontario, British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
