By Ernio Hernandez
10 Jan 2005

Blondes Faith Prince and Lucy Lawless.

Faith Prince and Lucy Lawless will take part in a concert version of the Jule Styne-Leo Robin musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes in Seattle.

The 5th Avenue Theatre and Seattle Men's Chorus team up for the first time to present this concert version the musical comedy at the Washington stage of the former, May 13-15. Tickets are on sale Jan. 10.

In Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Lorelei Lee (Prince) and her best friend Dorothy Shaw (Lawless) set off on a voyage to Paris looking for eligible men with money and diamonds to share.

Featuring music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Leo Robin and a book by Joseph Fields and Anita Loos — based on her novel, the musical opened on Broadway in 1949 starring Carol Channing and was later adapted into the 1953 film starring Marilyn Monroe.

The concert staging will feature the leading actors backed by the entire 250-member Seattle Men's Chorus and accompanied by a full orchestra. With minimal settings, costumes, staging and lights, the focus will be on the story and score which includes "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend."

Prince earned a Tony Award for her turn as Adelaide in the 1992 Broadway revival of Guys and Dolls. She has also appeared on Broadway in Noises Off, Bells Are Ringing, James Joyce's The Dead, Little Me, The King and I, What's Wrong with This Picture?, Nick & Nora and Jerome Robbins' Broadway as well as Off Broadway in A Man of No Importance, Falsettoland and Little Shop of Horrors.

Lawless, who is known to television audiences as the title warrior princess of "Xena," appeared on Broadway as Rizzo in the revival of Grease. The New Zealand born actress who has made appearances on "The X Files," "Hercules," "Less Than Perfect" and "Tarzan," is featured in the films "Spider-Man," "EuroTrip" and the upcoming "Boogeyman."

Tickets to Gentlemen Prefer Blondes at The 5th Avenue Theatre, 1308 5th Avenue in downtown Seattle, Washington go on sale Jan. 10. For more information, call (206) 292-ARTS (2787) or visit www.5thavenuetheatre.org.
