Report: Will Hurlyburly Revival Repeat History With Broadway Transfer?

By Ernio Hernandez
01 Feb 2005

The New Group's current Off-Broadway revival of David Rabe's Hurlyburly may make the same leap it made 20 years ago and transfer to Broadway, according to Variety.

The trade publication purports that producers Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy are in talks to possibly transfer the lauded Scott Elliott staging to Broadway or a larger Off-Broadway venue.

New Group executive director Geoff Rich told the paper, "This is the first time (Marshall/Kennedy) has given us commercial enhancement money." The producing duo have previously collaborated with The New Group artistic diretor Elliott on the film "A Map of the World."

Production spokespersons for The New Group staging told Playbill.com that there is no news beyond the current extension through March 19.

Ethan Hawke, Wallace Shawn, Parker Posey, Bobby Cannavale, Josh Hamilton, Catherine Kellner and Halley Wegryn Gross star in the new Off-Broadway staging. Elliott (Aunt Dan and Lemon) directs the work with a revised script by Rabe at the Acorn Theatre. The work began previews Jan. 11 opened Jan. 27 to positive critical response.

Interspersed with 80's music (Talking Heads, Queen and David Bowie) and occasional glimpses of the world through the set's pre-remote-controlled television ("The Smurfs," "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson"), Rabe's drama follows the lives of four men working the Hollywood machine. The quartet pontificate on their ex-wives, friendships and work while enduring life through vices (drugs, alcohol and women).

Hurlyburly originally ran Off-Broadway in 1984 with Mike Nichols directing a cast that included William Hurt, Judith Ivey, Harvey Keitel, Cynthia Nixon, Ron Silver, Jerry Stiller and Sigourney Weaver. The work then transferred to Broadway garnering four Tony nominations (with one win for Ivey). Rabe later adapted it for the screen for the 1998 film starring Sean Penn, Kevin Spacey, Anna Paquin, Meg Ryan, Chazz Palminteri and Robin Wright Penn.

Tickets to Hurlyburly at The New Group's home at Theatre Row, 410 West 42 St., are available by calling (212) 279-4200. For more information on The New Group, visit www.thenewgroup.org.
