Simon Jones and Larry Keith Confer in TACT Concert Revival of David Storey's Home March 12-14

By Kenneth Jones
17 Feb 2005

Home, by David Storey, is the next play to be explored in a unique concert setting by TACT (The Actors Company Theatre) in Manhattan

Co-artistic directors Scott Alan Evans, Cynthia Harris and Simon Jones announced that the 1970 winner of the New York Critics and the 1971 London Evening Standard Award for Best Play of the Year, will feature Simon Jones (Waiting in the Wings) and Larry Keith (Caroline, or Change).

Script-in-hand performances play March 12-14 at Florence Gould Hall, 55 E. 59th Street.

The play "begins with a conversation in a park between Harry and Jack, two seemingly respectable middle-class gentlemen, and culminates in several startling revelations."

John Gielgud and Ralph Richardson originated the roles in London and reprised their performances in the 1971 Broadway production which received five Tony nominations, including Best Play.

Embracing TACT's signature face-front presentational concert style (and including lighting design and live original music), Home will be directed by Scott Alan Evans with a cast that includes TACT company members Cynthia Darlow, Delphi Harrington, Jones and Keith, as well as guest artist Ron McClary.

The production team includes Mary Louise Geiger (lighting design) and John Slover (original music). Jenny Noterman serves as production stage manager.

David Storey was born in 1933 in Yorkshire, England and is a novelist and playwright. He began writing novels. His first published work, "The Sporting Life" (1960) adapted into a film starring Richard Harris. Other award-winning novels include "Flight into Camden" (1960), "Radcliffe" (1963) and "Saville" (1976). His latest is novel is "Thin-Ice Skater" (2004). His first play, The Restoration of Arnold Middleton, won the Evening Standard Award for "Most Promising Playwright." He followed it with The Contractor (1969), Home (1970) and The Changing Room (1972), all of which won New York Critics Best Play of the Year Award. Storey was associate artistic director of the Royal Court Theatre from 1972-1974, where he premiered all of his plays, including In Celebration (1969), later a film starring Alan Bates.

Home played New York's Morosco Theatre, running 110 performances.

Performance times are 7:30 PM March 12, 2 PM March 13 and 7:30 PM March 14. Tickets are $20. For information, call Ticketmaster at (212) 307-4100.

TACT "celebrates language, the actor, and the spoken word," according to its mission. "Founded by professional actors in 1992, TACT is dedicated to presenting neglected or rarely performed plays of literary merit with a focus on creating theatre from its essence: the text and the actor's ability to bring it to life."

Co-artistic director Scott Alan Evans states, "Our Concert Performance form of presentation allows us to re-focus the emphasis of the drama away from spectacle and production values and back to the words and the actor - creating theatre in its purest form. Most important, we offer these great plays and outstanding performances at an affordable ticket price."

The final production of TACT's 12th season will be R.U.R., by Karel Capek April 30-May 2.
