Luba Mason Pieces Songs Into "Collage" Cabaret in L.A., Through March 10

By Kenneth Jones
24 Feb 2005

Luba Mason, recent star of the Reprise! production of Pippin and the musical extravaganza, The Ten Commandments in Los Angeles, sings an evening of soulful songs from her debut album "Collage" Thursdays to March 10 in West Hollywood.

Theatregoers know Mason's work from Broadway's in Jekyll & Hyde, The Capeman and How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. She was tapped by Ruben Blades as a guest vocalist on his 2003 Grammy Award winning album "Mundo." Her solo disc, "Collage," on the PS Classics label, borrows from many influences, including Latin rhythms.

Mason's selections for the evening, drawn from her CD, include Richard and Robert Sherman's "Don't Shoot the Hooey To Me, Louie" from the Broadway musical Over Here!, a new Spanish lyric to Bacharach and David's "Look of Love" and the traditional folk ballad "Motherland." Also expect songs by modern composers such as Van Morrison's "Moondance," Lou Reed and Ruben Blades' "The Calm Before The Storm", Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now" and Tom Waits' "Take Me Home."

Performances for the Thursdays-only run began Feb. 17 at Masquer's Cabaret, 8334 West Third St. Showtime is 9:30 PM. For tickets or information, call (323) 653-4848.
