Doubt Begins California Run with Linda Hunt and Jonathan Cake, March 4

By Ernio Hernandez
04 Mar 2005

While Doubt prepares for its Broadway debut, Pasadena Playhouse presents the west coast premiere of the John Patrick Shanley drama at its California home, starting March 4.

Claudia Weill (Found a Peanut, "The Other Half of the Sky") directs the Pasadena staging with Academy Award winner Linda Hunt set to open March 11 for a run through April 10.

The new tale set in a Catholic junior high school in the Bronx in 1964 follows a nun who presides over the school and her suspicions of a priest when a teacher notices a child's peculiar behavior.

The work debuted Off-Broadway in the fall at Manhattan Theatre Club to positive critical and audience response. The work is set to transfer to the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway March 9 for a March 31 opening.

Hunt, who won for her Oscar for Peter Weir's "The Year of Living Dangerously," has appeared on Broadway in Arthur Kopit'sEnd of the World and a 1975 revival of Eugene O'Neill's Ah, Wilderness! as well as Off-Broadway turns in Caryl Churchill's Top Girls and originating the role of Dan in Wallace Shawn's Aunt Dan and Lemon (in London and NYC). Other credits include The Cherry Orchard (BAM), Dolly Levi in The Matchmaker (La Jolla Playhouse) and the voice of Grandmother Willow in "Pocahontas" and Management on HBO's "Carnivale."

Joining her in the cast are Jonathan Cake (Jason in the recent Broadway revival of Medea) as Father Flynn, Mandy Freund (Onionheads, "Popular") as Sister James and Patrice Pitman Quinn (The Exonerated, Betsy Brown ) as Mrs. Muller.

The design team for Doubt features Gary L. Wissmann (scenic), Alex Jaeger (costumes), Jeremy Pivnick (lighting) and Steven Cahill (sound) — who also provides original music. Anna Belle serves as production stage manager with Michelle Blair.

Bronx scribe Shanley has penned the plays Cellini, Savage in Limbo, the dreamer examines his pillow, Beggars in the House of Plenty, Welcome to the Moon, Four Dogs and a Bone, Italian American Reconciliation, Missing/Kissing, The Big Funk, Where’s My Money? and Dirty Story. His new work Sailor's Song and a revival of his Danny and the Deep Blue Sea both played Off-Broadway last year. As a screenwriter, he is known for his "Five Corners" and "Moonstruck."

Tickets to Doubt at Pasadena Playhouse, at 39 South El Molino Ave. in Pasadena, CA , call (626) 356-PLAY. For more information, visit www.pasadenaplayhouse.org.
