LaChiusa, Schwartz, Bucchino, Marzullo and More Write Cello Pieces for March 7 Concert

The New Voices Collective, known for its concerts of new American songs, recently presented theatre composers, musical directors and orchestrators with a unique challenge for its next presentation: Create a chamber piece for cello.

The result, The Cello Project, 7 PM March 7 at the Leonard Nimoy Thalia at Symphony Space in Manhattan, is "an ambitious cycle of 12 world-premiere chamber pieces featuring American cellist Peter Sachon." It's part of NVC's Rush Hour Chamber Music series.

The starry array of composers whose works will be premiered on the program include Stephen Schwartz (Wicked), Michael John LaChiusa (Hello Again, Marie Christine, The Wild Party), John Bucchino (Lavender Girl, It's Only Life), Bruce Coughlin (a Tony Award nominee for his musical theatre orchestrations), Jeff Blumenkrantz (Urban Cowboy), Georgia Stitt (The Water), Steve Marzullo (known as a musical director), Dan Lipton (Joe!), David Rossmer (Joyce Jackson's Guide to Dating), Tom Kitt (Feeling Electric, High Fidelity), Charles du Chateau (associate conductor of Broadway's Fiddler on the Roof), Jason Carr (Born Again, Lee Miller) and George Stiles (Moll Flanders, Tom Jones).

According to NVC, "The 12 pieces explore the cello's almost limitless possibilities as both a solo instrument and chamber-music partner. Written across a wide-range of styles and for various instrumental combinations, the pieces will also showcase the talents of artists such as Rebecca Luker, soprano; Joshua Rosenblum, piano; Christian Hebel, violin; Gregory Landes, percussion; Ed Matthew, clarinet; and Billy Miller, percussion."

NVC's Rush Hour Chamber Music Series is "designed to accommodate the busy New Yorker, who can stop by for a concert after work — at a reasonable price — and still be home in time for dinner."

The concerts last approximately one hour and "feature New York's finest chamber ensembles, presenting a diverse selection of repertoire, both classical and modern."

Tickets are $21 ($18 for Symphony Space members, $15 for students/seniors) and are available by phone at (212) 864-5400 or online at www.symphonyspace.org.

Since its inception in January 2003, the New Voices Collective has been "dedicated to nurturing young composers in the creation of new works, as well as encouraging established composers to find their 'new voice' by experimenting with different musical genres. The New Voices Collective (NVC) provides both young and established composers the opportunity to hear their work performed by well-known classical and Broadway artists."
