Rinne Groff's Inky Opens March 13 in Women's Project Staging in NYC; Loretta Greco Directs

By Kenneth Jones
13 Mar 2005

Rinne Groff's Inky, a play about a young Manhattan couple in the 1980s, previously seen Off-Off-Broadway in 1999 and 2000, gets a fresh staging by Women's Project Off-Broadway, opening March 13 after previews from March 2.

Loretta Greco, producing artistic director of Women's Project, stages the play at the Julia Miles Theatre. Performances continue to April 3.

According to WP, "Inky takes a look at a Manhattan couple's childlike desire to 'have it all' during the high rolling, morally skewed 1980s. When this couple takes in a young Slavic nanny obsessed with Muhammed Ali, they are forced to face both their limitations and their potential for change in this darkly comic story about the importance of fighting back."

The company includes Jessi Campbell, Marianne Hagan, Jason Pugatch and Elizabeth Schweitzer. The creative team is made up of set designer Robert Brill, lighting designer Sarah Sidman, costume designer Valerie Marcus Ramshur and composer and sound designer Robert Kaplowitz.

Clubbed Thumb originally presented the workshop version of Inky in June 1999 at HERE Arts Center. A well-reviewed full production in January 2000 was a co-production between Clubbed Thumb and Salt Theater Company at Altered Stages in Manhattan. This new staging is the world premiere of a revised version of the work.

Groff's plays include The Ruby Sunrise (2004 Humana Festival), Moliere Impromptu, The Five Hysterical Girls Theorem, Jimmy Carter Was a Democrat, Orange Lemon Egg Canary and Of a White Christmas.

She is also book-writer of the upcoming musical You Never Know, with book, music and lyrics by Charles Strouse, directed by Amanda Dehnert for Trinity Rep in Providence, Rhode Island.

Greco's staging of The Story was seen at The Public Theater in 2003-04.

The Julia Miles Theater is at 424 W. 55th Street (between Ninth and Tenth Aves.).

The resident professional Women's Project streamlined its name recently from the more cumbersome Women's Project & Productions. The troupe's mission includes being devoted to plays by, for and about women, although works by male writers have been part of the mix in the past.
