Cynthia Nixon Will Reunite With Talley Family in MTC Revival of Lanford Wilson Play; Ayckbourn, Cruz Announced

Manhattan Theatre Club's 2005-06 season will include a Broadway revival of Lanford Wilson's Talley's Folly starring Cynthia Nixon of "Sex and the City," MTC announced March 21.

Lynne Meadow, artistic director, and Barry Grove, executive producer, revealed four works to appear on MTC stages in the coming year.

David Lindsay-Abaire's Rabbit Hole, about a couple dealing with the aftermath of a tragic accident, had previously been reported by Playbill.com. Daniel Sullivan will direct the world premiere at City Center, MTC's Off-Broadway home.

Nilo Cruz's The Beauty of the Father will make its New York premiere at City Center. Michael Greif will direct the play, about a young woman who travels to Spain to visit her estranged father "and quickly becomes immersed in his vibrant, artistic world," according to MTC. "But will a charming Moroccan suitor stand in the way of their reconciliation?"

Cruz won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2003 for Anna in the Tropics.

An expected season of seven plays (three more are to be announced) will include a Broadway staging of Alan Ayckbourn's Absurd Person Singular, set on successive Christmas Eves, directed by Meadow at the Biltmore. It's a "comedy of social class and marriage on the rocks."

The casting of Cynthia Nixon as WASPy Sally Talley strikes a note with fans of Wilson's Talley trilogy of plays. When she was a child actress, Nixon appeared in Fifth of July in New York (and in a PBS broadcast of the play). Now she'll play a rich, plainspoken small-town girl wooed by a Jewish lad in a boathouse on her family property in Missouri. The play won Lanford Wilson the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. "Set on the Fourth of July in 1944, Talley's Folly follows two unlikely lovers in their hesitant dance toward the impossible: true love," according to MTC notes.

Doug Hughes (Frozen, Doubt) will direct at the Biltmore.
