Wayne Lemon's Jesus Hates Me To Get World Premiere at Denver Center in 2006

By Kenneth Jones
29 Mar 2005

Jesus Hates Me, the irreverent first stage work by television writer Wayne Lemon, will get its world premiere as part of the Denver Center Theatre Company's 2005-06 season, artistic director Kent Thompson and director of new play development Bruce K. Sevy announced.

"My main character's desire to flee to Colorado echoes my own as I've long found it a place of amazing, unspoiled beauty," Lemon said in a statement. "I am thrilled the play will have its premiere in Denver which may not be the promised land, but it's pretty close."

Performances will play Jan. 12-March 11, 2006 at Denver Center for the Performing Arts' Ricketson Theatre, one of a handful of spaces used by the Tony Award-honored not-for-profit resident theatre.

The dark comedy is about "Ethan, a 20-year-old high school football star with a bum knee and no bank account." He's "stuck fast in dead-end rural Texas. Living with his clinging mother in a trailer on the 7th hole of a Bible-themed miniature golf course, he seeks any means of escape, from Jack Daniels to a bus ticket out of town. When Ethan is offered an opportunity to work at a gay ski resort in Colorado, suddenly he finds everyone and everything seeming to conspire against him and his desperate need to find identity, sanity, faith and freedom. Insightful, biting, unpredictable and hilarious."

Lemon's debut stage play, Jesus Hates Me , was recently chosen to be a part of the 2005 Southern Writers' Project by the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. A native Texan and son of a Southern Baptist minister, Lemon began his career as a theatre and music critic for the Austin Chronicle while attending film school at the University of Texas. "After having a Glock handgun thrown at him while working with inner city youth in East Austin," he relocated to Los Angeles. He has developed screenplays for various studios including Disney and Warner Brothers as well as pilots at all the major networks. He has written for several TV series including "Grace Under Fire" and "The Famous Teddy Z."

Single tickets for the first three shows of the season will go on sale in August.
