The Andrew Lloyd Webber-T.S. Eliot musical, Cats, will pounce Dec. 6-18, 2005. The Bollywood-themed musical Bombay Dreams will play May 23-June 4, 2006. Both play TUTS' home at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts.
This is one of the first announcements about a Bombay Dreams tour engagement.
"TUTS is constantly seeking opportunities to stage extraordinary productions for its Houston audiences," said Young. "The time sensitivity of show availability can often dictate changes to a previously announced season."
According to Young, TUTS jumped at the chance to stage its own production of Cats, upon recently learning that the rights to the show were available.
"TUTS couldn't pass up, after many seasons of rights negotiations, the chance to finally mount Cats , one of the all-time favorites of theatre audience surveys," Young said. "We knew we had to include our own production of this world phenomenon in our 2005-2006 season."
After announcing the 2005-2006 season in January, TUTS learned that the first national tour of We Will Rock You , the musical celebrating the music of the legendary band, Queen, would not be hitting the road after all. According to Young, TUTS was disappointed in not being able to bring the premiere of this West End hit to Houston audiences, but was delighted to have another premiere, Bombay Dreams , take its place.
The recent Tony Award-nominated Broadway show (slightly revised from its London version) features music by A.R. Rahman, lyrics by Don Black, and a book by Meera Syal and Thomas Meehan, based on the idea by Shekhar Kapur. TUTS was one of the Broadway production investors before its closing this past January.
Set amid India's bustling film industry, also known as Bollywood, the musical tells the story of a handsome young man of the slums who dreams of finding stardom and romance in a rich and exotic land.
"With America’s love for such recent Bollywood-style films as 'Monsoon Wedding' and 'Bride and Prejudice,' this first national tour of Bombay Dreams is truly timely," said Young. "The tour routing dictated that this show fall into our 2005-2006 season, and we couldn’t ask for a more spectacular production to offer our audience."
Previously announced by TUTS were a tour of Chicago Oct. 11-23, 2005; the Houston premiere of Doctor Dolittle Jan. 17-29, 2006; the TUTS production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast March 14-26, 2006; and the TUTS premiere of 110 In The Shade May 9-21, 2006.
