James Lapine's Family Drama Fran's Bed to Settle Off-Broadway in 2005-06

By Ernio Hernandez
05 Apr 2005

James Lapine's Fran's Bed will have its New York debut at Off-Broadway's Playwrights Horizons, the author told Playbill.com.

Lapine — who directs the upcoming Broadway musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee — said the recent work will play in the not-for-profit's 2005-06 season. Playwrights Horizons has not yet announced its coming slate.

The drama made its world premiere in October 2003 at The Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, CT, and originally starred Mia Farrow ("Rosemary's Baby," "Hannah and Her Sisters") and Harris Yulin (Hedda Gabler, The Diary of Anne Frank).

In Fran's Bed, Farrow portrayed a sick woman who, on her death bed, reveals the many secrets of her life to her two grown daughters. The work was developed through prior readings at the Connecticut stage (featuring Molly Ringwald, Veanne Cox and Adriane Lenox) and May 2004 at New York Stage and Film.

Lapine (Into the Woods, Passion) is a three-time Tony Award winner and Pulitzer Prize winner (for his Stephen Sondheim collaboration Sunday in the Park With George). Other works directed by Lapine include Falsettos, A New Brain, The Diary of Anne Frank, Golden Child, Dirty Blonde and Amour.

The Long Wharf cast also included Marcia DeBonis ("Tadpole," "L.I.E."), Christopher Innvar (Victor/Victoria, Floyd Collins), Kellie Overbey (QED, Betty's Summer Vacation), Brenda Pressley (Dreamgirls) and Carrie Preston (Indiscretions, Chaucer in Rome).
