Alda, Tambor, Schreiber Pitch A New Glengarry Glen Ross to Broadway, April 8

By Ernio Hernandez
08 Apr 2005

Alan Alda, Jeffrey Tambor and Liev Schreiber star with Gordon Clapp, Frederick Weller Tom Wopat and Jordan Lage in the new Joe Mantello Broadway revival of David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross.

Mantello (Assassins, Take Me Out) directs the Mamet work, set to begin previews at the Royale Theatre April 8 and open May 1 for a limited engagement currently slated through Aug. 28.

Glengarry Glen Ross follows the cutthroat world of real estate where salesmen are vying for the best leads to make the biggest sales. The play was produced on Broadway in 1984 under the direction of Gregory Mosher following London and Chicago runs. The drama earned Mamet the Pulitzer Prize and was later adapted by the scribe for the 1992 film starring Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alan Arkin, Ed Harris and Kevin Spacey.

The male ensemble who populate the new Broadway cast includes Alan Alda (QED, "M*A*S*H") as Shelly Levene, Jeffrey Tambor (Sly Fox, "Arrested Development") as George Aaronow, Liev Schreiber (Henry V, "Scream") as Richard Roma, Gordon Clapp ("NYPD Blue," "Moonlight Mile") as Dave Moss, Tom Wopat (Annie Get Your Gun, "The Dukes of Hazzard") as James Lingk, Frederick Weller (Take Me Out, "The Shape of Things") as John Williamson and Jordan Lage (The Best Man, "The Spanish Prisoner") as the detective Baylen.

The design team of Glengarry Glen Ross will feature Santo Loquasto (sets), Laura Bauer (costumes) and Kenneth Posner (lighting).

The producing team includes Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel, JAM Theatricals, Boyett Ostar Productions, Ronald Frankel, Philip Lacerte, Stephanie McClelland/CJM, Barry Weisbord, Zendog Productions in association with Herbert Goldsmith Productions by special arrangement with Roundabout Theatre Company.

Mamet's new play Romance is currently being staged Off-Broadway at the Atlantic Theatre Company — which he co-founded with actor William H. Macy. Other works he has penned include Speed the-Plow, American Buffalo, Oleanna, Cryptogram, The Old Neighborhood, Boston Marriage and Sexual Perversity in Chicago. His screenplays include "State and Main," "The Spanish Prisoner" and "Heist."

Glengarry Glen Ross will perform at Broadway's Royale Theatre, located at 242 West 45th Street.
