Salome: The Reading Tour — with Pacino and Tomei — Canceled

By Andrew Gans
11 Apr 2005

The tour of Oscar Wilde's Salome: The Reading, which was to feature Al Pacino and Marisa Tomei reprising their Broadway work, has been canceled.

The limited Southern California tour of Salome was announced in Variety April 10 and was scheduled to kick off April 25 at San Bernardino's California Theater for the Performing Arts. Playbill.com has learned that the entire tour has been canceled. A press statement simply reads, "The production made the decision to cancel this engagement and the planned subsequent tour due to a number of scheduling conflicts. The producers regret any inconvenience this has caused for the public." Refunds are available at the point of purchase.

Produced by Robert Fox, Daryl Roth and Amy Nederlander, the Broadway staging of Salome featured direction by Parsons and original music by Yukio Tsuji. The remainder of the creative team comprised Peter Larkin (set design), Jane Greenwood (set design), Howard Thies (lighting design) and Erich Brechtel and David Schnirman (sound design). The company also included Dianne Wiest and David Strathairn with Timothy Altmeyer, Jill Alexander, Daryl Dismond, Timothy Doyle, Robert Heller, Owen Hollander, Bob Lavelle, Chris McGarry, Ed Setrakian and Kevin Stapleton.

Salome, a tale of desire and revenge, follows the legend of King Herod and his lust for Salome, his young stepdaughter, and her sexual baiting of John the Baptist.

Al Pacino was most recently on Broadway in Oscar Wilde's Salome: The Reading. He made his Broadway debut in the 1969 production of Does a Tiger Wear Necktie?, earning a Tony Award for his performance. He scored another Tony for his role in the 1977 revival of The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel. Prior to Salome, the stage and film actor was last on Broadway in 1996 in a revival of Hughie, which he also directed. Pacino's other Broadway credits include Camino Real, King Richard III, American Buffalo and Chinese Coffee. He received the Academy Award for his work in the film "Scent of a Woman."
