"Deadwood" Damsel To Star in A Moon for the Misbegotten in San Francisco

By Robert Simonson
and Ernio Hernandez
28 Apr 2005

"Deadwood" actress Robin Weigert, known for her blowsy, mannish turn as Calamity Jane in the HBO series, will star as tough Josie Hogan in American Conservatory Theater's A Moon for the Misbegotten starting in San Francisco April 28.

Laird Williamson directs the revival of Eugene O'Neill's play, which opens May 4 at A.C.T.'s Geary Theater for a run through May 29.

Set in a Connecticut farmhouse in early September 1923, the drama centers around the struggles of a strong, sturdy woman with her never-do-well father and weak-willed, dissolute, would-be beau, Jim Tyrone (a refugee from Long Day's Journey Into Night).

Broadway vet Weigert, also an Emmy Award nominee for her turn as Jane on "Deadwood," appeared on the Geary Stage in the 2001 staging of Richard Nelson's Goodnight Children Everywhere. Other credits include Broadway's Noises Off and Twelfth Night, as well as Off-Broadway's The Seagull, A Place at the Table, Arms and the Man and Madame Melville.

Outgoing core company actor Marco Barricelli — who portrayed Tyrone in the 1999 Williamson-directed production of Long Day's Journey into Night at A.C.T. — reprises the role in Moon for his farewell performance. Former A.C.T. company member Raye Birk (A Christmas Carol) takes on the role of Phil Hogan.

The cast also features Andy Butterfield (A.C.T.'s The Real Thing) as Mike Hogan and David Arrow as T. Steadman Harder.

The design team for A Moon for the Misbegotten includes Rob Morgan (sets), Sandra Woodall (costumes), Don Darnutzer (lights) and Garth Hemphill (sound).

Williamson has previously staged A.C.T. productions of The Glass Menagerie, Machinal, The Matchmaker, Sunday in the Park with George, End of the World with Symposium to Follow, The Imaginary Invalid, A Month in the Country, The Visit and Pantagleize.

The most recent Broadway revival of Moon played at Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre from March 19-July 2, 2000. Cherry Jones (Doubt) played Josie opposite Gabriel Byrne (Hollywood's "Little Women") as James Tyrone, Jr. Actor Roy Dotrice (who would win the Tony Award for his performance) played her father Phil Hogan under the direction of Daniel Sullivan.

Tickets for A Moon for the Misbegotten, at the Geary Theater, 405 Geary Street in San Francisco, CA are available by calling (415)749-2228 or on the A.C.T. website at www.act-sf.org.
