Gloria Steinem Hosts Special NY Reading of New Musical Woman of Will May 5

By Andrew Gans
05 May 2005

Women's movement pioneer — and the co-founder of the Ms. Foundation — Gloria Steinem will host a special sneak preview of the new musical A Woman of Will May 5 in Manhattan.

The musical, written by Amanda McBroom and Joel Silberman, is scheduled to open at an Off-Broadway theatre-to-be-announced some time in fall 2005. Originally titled Lady Macbeth Sings the Blues, the production premiered in June 2004 at the Rubicon Theatre in Ventura, CA.

The May 5 reading, featuring a performance by singer-composer McBroom, will also include the announcement of a new relationship between the musical and the Ms. Foundation. The foundation will receive a portion of A Woman of Will ticket and merchandise sales as well as 40% of the sales of the musical's cast album.

A Woman of Will, according to production notes, is "the musical adventure of a writer in crisis — both personal and professional. Hired to finish the lyrics of a Broadway-bound musical version of The Merchant of Venice, Kate faces the demands of an unrelenting deadline in addition to important decisions about her marriage and future. In desperation she reaches out to Shakespeare’s leading ladies for guidance. What follows is a celebration of life in a crackling display of wit and wisdom bursting forth from 17 original songs."

Singer-songwriter Amanda McBroom composed the award-winning song "The Rose." A consummate cabaret performer, she has released six solo CDs as well as the cast album of her musical, Heartbeats. She also starred in the title role of Mame at L.A.'s Cabrillo Music Theatre. Composer Joel Silberman is also a pianist, singer, arranger, conductor, producer, director and educator.
