Urinetown Vets Star in New Monica! The Musical, About a Certain Intern

By Robert Simonson
18 May 2005

Megan Lawrence

Monica Lewinsky, the only intern in the history of humankind to be universally known by her first name, is the subject of the long-in-development show Monica! The Musical, which will a limited run at Manhattan's Theatre Three May 20-27.

Directed by Casey Hushion, the new musical features book and lyrics by Daniel J. Blau and Tracie Potochnik, music by Adam Blau and musical direction by Nadia DiGiallonardo.

Potochnik and the two Blau brothers have been dealing with Monica! The Musical almost as long as the world has had to contend with the real Monica, whose affair with Bill Clinton brought the world to a screeching halt and almost resulting in the toppling of a President. They began work in 1998. Staged readings have been presented by Manhattan Theatre Club and the New York Musical Theater Festival.

According to press materials, the musical asks the questions "Exactly how did something this ridiculous happen? And why did we care so much?" Assisting with the answer is a large corp of actors.

Christine DiGiallonardo plays the woman once routinely called a "portly pepperpot"—Monica. Megan Lawrence, the original Little Becky Two Shoes in Urinetown is Hillary Clinton and Duke LaFoon is her straying hubby, Bill. Eric LaJuan Summers (Aida) plays Clinton confidante Vernon Jordan, Roz Beauty Davis is Clinton's secretary Betty Currie, Natalie Joy Johnson portrays former Attorney General Janet Reno, Charlie Pollock (a Bobby Strong of Urinetown) is dogged independent prosecutor Ken Starr and Ron DeStefano plays Clinton aide George Stephanopoulos.

In an October 2003 reading, Donna Lynne Champlin played Reno and future Wicked star Shoshana Bean played Hillary.
