Eustis, Rashad, Gien Among 2005 Elliot Norton Award Winners in Boston

The 23rd annual Elliot Norton Awards, honoring theatrical excellence in the Boston area, were announced May 23, with Oskar Eustis and Phylicia Rashad emerging as victors.

Eustis, for many years the artistic director of Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, Rhode Island, was given the Norton Prize for Sustained Excellence. Eustis recently accepted a post as head of New York City's Public Theater.

Rashad won the prize for Outstanding Actress, Large Company for her work in August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean at the Huntington Theatre Company. Rashad later repeated her performance on Broadway.

Pamela Gien, much honored for her solo piece about growing up in South Africa, The Syringa Tree, was honored once again, winning an award for Outstanding Solo Performance.

Outstanding Production by a Visiting Company: The Far Side of the Moon (Ex Machina, Quebec; presented by American Repertory Theatre)
Outstanding Production by a Large Resident Company: The Miser (American Repertory Theatre)
Outstanding Production by a Small Resident Company: The Sanctuary Lamp (Súgán Theatre Company)
Outstanding Production by a Local Fringe Company: Blue/Orange (Zeitgeist Stage Company)
Outstanding Solo Performance: Pamela Gien in her The Syringa Tree (American Repertory Theatre)
Outstanding New Script: Sonia Flew by Melinda Lopez (Huntington Theatre Company)
Outstanding Director, Large Company: Kent Gash for Topdog/Underdog (Trinity Repertory Company & New Repertory Theatre)
Outstanding Director, Small Company: Adam Zahler for Permanent Collection (New Repertory Theatre)
Outstanding Set Design, Large Company: Adam Stockhausen for Sonia Flew and 36 Views (Huntington Theatre Company)
Outstanding Set Design, Small Company: Richard Chambers for The Glider (Boston Playwrights’ Theatre)
Special Citation: Shear Madness "for 25 years of hair-raising hijinks that have kept dozens of Boston actors employed and taught a generation of performers the art of comic timing."
Special Citation: City Stage Company "for thirty years of inspiring children and families to make discoveries about themselves through theater."
Outstanding Actress, Large Company: Phylicia Rashad for Gem of the Ocean (Huntington Theatre Company)
Outstanding Actress, Small Company: Andrea C. Ross for A Little Night Music (Lyric Stage Company of Boston), and for The Sound of Music and Ramona Quimby (Wheelock Family Theatre)
Outstanding Actor, Large Company: John Kelly for Dido, Queen of Carthage (American Repertory Theatre)
Outstanding Actor, Small Company: Benjamin Evett for Permanent Collection and Quills (New Repertory Theatre) and for Richard III (Actors’ Shakespeare Project)

In addition, actress Elaine Stritch was given the Norton Lifetime Achievement Award. She accepted the prize via videotape.

The awards are presented by The Boston Theater Critics Association. This year's selection committee included: Terry Byrne, Carolyn Clay, Iris Fanger, Joyce Kulhawik, Jon Lehman, Bill Marx, Ed Siegel and Caldwell Titcomb.
