Tony Wins = Big Box Office for Doubt, Piazza, Spelling Bee and Spamalot

Tony Awards typically translate to a bump in box office for Broadway's big winners and the 2005 ceremony provided such proof for Best Play Doubt and Best Musical Monty Python's Spamalot and other winning shows as well.
John Patrick Shanley's four-time Tony Award winner, Doubt, earned actors Cherry Jones and Adriane Lenox, director Doug Hughes and the production itself the theatrical accolade. Audiences, in turn, approved of the show with about three times the normal Monday figure at press time, according to a production spokesperson.
The big Tony winner of the evening (with six awards), The Light in the Piazza,
has a surge in ticket sales of around $300,000, a production spokesperson confirmed. The musical's other contender The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee expects to do more than four times its regular Monday intake.
The evening's final prize of Best Musical went to Monty Python's Spamalot whose sales are "way ahead of typical Monday sales" according to a show representative with the single ticket advance approaching $30 million. The sell-out show — which also earned star Sara Ramirez her first Tony— enjoyed another top week at the box office with a weekly gross record of $926,192 for week ending June 5.
More numbers are expected to soar for other winners, including Best Play Revival Glengarry Glen Ross and Best Musical Revival La Cage aux Folles, but no figures could be ascertained at press time.
