Playbill.com has learned that Love will replace original Hairspray star Mary Bond Davis in the role of Motormouth Mabel. Love's agent told Playbill.com that the singing actress is currently in rehearsals for the role. She will begin performances July 7, according to a production spokesperson. As Mabel, Love will get to sing the first-act finale "Big, Blonde & Beautiful" and the second-act showstopper "I Know Where I've Been."
Actress-singer Darlene Love has appeared on Broadway in Grease, Leader of the Pack and the cult classic Carrie. She was also nominated to the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame. Love's screen credits include "Shindig!," "Change of Habit," "Another World" and all four "Lethal Weapon" films. Her most recent recordings are titled "Age of Miracles" and "Unconditional Love."
Hairspray opened on Broadway on Aug. 15, 2002. It won Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Score (Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman), Best Book (Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan), Best Actor in a Musical (Harvey Fierstein), Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Dick Latessa), Best Direction of a Musical (Jack O'Brien) and Best Costume Design (William Ivey Long).
Performances play the Neil Simon Theatre. Bruce Vilanch and Tony Award winner Marissa Jaret Winokur currently co-star.
