Producer Intends to Bring Musical of Grumpy Old Men to Broadway

By Robert Simonson
08 Jul 2005

Producer Jeff Gardner has secured the rights to the 1993 hit movie "Grumpy Old Men" and hopes to turn the property into a stage musical and bring it to Broadway in spring 2008, Variety reported.

Gardner, an actor whose credits include The Wild Party, is new to the producing game. He previously produced Night Out in San Diego.

Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau had a late career hit with "Grumpy Old Men," in which they played two crotchety neighbors whose intense dislike for each other only grows when they begin competing for the affections of sexy new neighbor Ann-Margret. The film produced a sequel, "Grumpier Old Men," in 1995.

"Grumpy Old Men" is only the latest film property to be developed into a musical. Other titles on their way to Broadway include "Legally Blonde," "Moonstruck," "Ball of Fire," "The Wedding Singer," "Heartbreakers," "Those Lips, Those Eyes," "The Thomas Crown Affair" and "Mermaids."
