Boston's "Free Shakespeare on the Common" Hamlet with Donovan Begins July 16

By Ernio Hernandez
16 Jul 2005

Stage and screen star Jeffrey Donovan stars as the Danish prince for Boston's "Free Shakespeare on the Common" presentation of Hamlet, starting July 16.

Commonwealth Shakespeare Company artistic director Steven Maler directs the work on Boston Common slated to run through Aug. 7 at a new space in the park, Parade Grounds (by Beacon & Charles St.) because the production outgrew its previous home by the Parkman Bandstand. Last year's staging of Much Ado About Nothing starring Jonno Roberts drew more than 85,000 audience members.

Donovan starred last year in USA's "Touching Evil." The actor has been seen on Broadway in A View From The Bridge, An Inspector Calls and Off-Broadway in Things You Shouldn't Say Past Midnight, The Glory of Living, Troilus and Cressida, Skyscraper, Oedipus and Freedomland. Films credits include "Hitch," "Bait, and "Sleepers" and his television roles have also include "Spin City," "The Pretender," and guest appearances on "CSI: Miami" and "Homicide."

The cast also features Will Lyman (The Passion of Dracula) as Claudius, Karen MacDonald (Olly's Prison, The Provok'd Wife) as Gertrude, Jonno Roberts (Take Me Out, Bug) as Laertes, Georgia Hatzis (Much Ado About Nothing) as Ophelia, Sam Weisman (director of "George and the Jungle") as Polonius, John Kooi (Othello, Twelfth Night) as Rosencrantz; John Kuntz (Betty’s Summer Vacation) as Guildenstern & Osric, Jacqui Parker (Much Ado About Nothing) as Player Queen, Jeremiah Kissel (Romeo and Juliet, Henry V) as Ghost, Player King and Gravedigger. Jeff Gill as Priest and Voltimand; Jonah Mitropoulos as Francisco and Lucius; John Porell as Marcellus and Captain to Fortinbras; and Pedro Pascal as Horatio fill out the ensemble.

The design team for Hamlet will include Leiko Fuseya (scenic), Clint E.B. Ramos (costumes), Linda O'Brien (lighting) and J Hagenbuckle (sound) — who also provides original music. Craig Handel handles fight choreography.

The Wang Center for the Performing Arts present the work with support from Target Stores, in association with the Boston Globe and John Hancock Financial Services.

Past CSC presentations have included Macbeth starring Jay O. Sanders, Henry V starring Anthony Rapp, Twelfth Night, The Tempest, Julius Caesar, As You Like It and Romeo and Juliet. CSC's inaugural 1996 production, A Midsummer Night’s Dream was staged at Copley Square.
