Tony Nominee Hart Plays Lady Liberty in Fleet Week: The Musical at Fringe NYC

By Ernio Hernandez
28 Jul 2005

Georgy Tony Award nominee Melissa Hart will play the lovelorn Statue of Liberty opposite Fringe favorite Micah Bucey as one of the four On The Town-type sailors for Fleet Week: The Musical at the upcoming New York International Fringe Festival.

Eric Pliner — who staged the 1999 Fringe hit Jinkies! — directs the new work which will run Aug. 18-26 at The Lucille Lortel Theatre. Gideon Productions and Lindsay Bowen produce.

Fleet Week: The Musical is billed as "a gay salute to the patriotic musicals of yesteryear." According to production notes the plot involves "four blissfully unenlightened sailors and their queeny chaplain hit the NYC streets for Fleet Week looking for romance and adventure. They stumble into a bathhouse (don’t ask) and overhear a dastardly plot (don’t tell) — but can they stop it when nobody believes their story? (Don’t know.)"

The Lucretia Jones Mysteries collaborators — composer Sean Williams, bookwriter Mac Rogers and lyricist Jordana Williams — reteam for the new work featuring "20-odd songs from every musical theater tradition" for the show which features "dancing sailors, harmonizing villains, and a racy Statue of Liberty who [ironically] belts torch songs."

Bucey — a winner for Oustanding Peformer at last year's Fringe for The Only Thing Straight Is My Jacket — plays one of the sailor quartet with Christopher Guilmet, Brian Golub and Laura Perloe. Broadway vet Hart (Cabaret, The Scarlet Pimpernel) steps up to the pedestal as the Statue of Liberty with Backstage Bistro Award-winner Rob Maitner (Urinetown Fringe cast) as The Chaplain. Also featured in the ensemble cast are Renee Delio, Brian M. Golub, Brian Karim, Marnie Klar, Laura Perloe, Bruce Sabath and Byron St. Cyr.

The design team for Fleet Week: The Musical features Paulo Seixas (set), and Sarah Cubbage (costumes). Daniel Feyer serves as music director with veteran Broadway hoofer Christopher F. Davis (On The Town, Candide) provides choreography.

Gideon Productions has previously presented productions of Dirty Juanita, The Second String, The Electric Cat (a children’s musical) and several runs of The Lucretia Jones Mysteries. Lindsay Bowen is part of the producing team of The 24 Hour Plays and had a hand in productions of Sakharam Binder, Trust, Smashing and The Situation Room.

Tickets for Fleet Week: The Musical at The Lucille Lortel Theatre 121 Christopher Street (between Bleecker & Hudson), call (212) 279-4488 or (888) FringeNYC (outside New York). For more information, visit www.fleetweekthemusical.com or www.FringeNYC.org.
