The new FX series "Starved" — co-starring two-time Tony nominee Laura Benanti, who was recently cast in the upcoming musical of The Wedding Singer — makes its television premiere Aug. 4.

Co-starring Sterling K. Brown, Del Pentecost and Eric Schaeffer, the new comedy will debut at 10 PM ET with a rebroadcast scheduled for 11 PM; check local listings. The series features Benanti as one of four friends, all in their thirties, who are dealing with eating disorders.

Benanti, according to the show's official website, plays Billie, a "bisexual recovering bulimic/anorexic who is an up-and-coming singer/songwriter." The other characters include a recovering anorexic, a compulsive overeater and a recovering bulimic.

Described as a "comedic take on America's addiction to food," "Starved" was written and directed by Eric Schaeffer. Schaeffer also appears in the pilot episode of the series, which was filmed in New York. Schaeffer and Dan Pasternack are executive producers of the new comedy.

According to TV Guide, the premiere episode is described thusly: "The friends attend a radical eating-disorder group that takes a harsh approach to recovery. Also, Sam (Eric Schaeffer) tries to make over his date so that she resembles a woman from a TV commercial, and Dan (Del Pentecost) considers gastric-bypass surgery."

Laura Benanti most recently portrayed Claudia in the Tony-winning revival of Maury Yeston’s Nine. She received Tony Award nominations for her performances in Swing! and the revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods. She was also seen in The Sound of Music, Time and Again and the City Center Encores! mounting of Wonderful Town. Benanti’s regional credits include roles in A Little Night Music, Man of La Mancha and A Winter’s Tale.
